Kanha

‘The wild is all about the feeling of teetering in the unknown’

If you have experienced Kanha, then your relatability to the above quote is as high as the spirit of the place. The Kanha National Park, apart from being the largest National Park of central India, is also one of the few tiger reserves in India, hence is also popular by the name Kanha Tiger Reserves. Situated in the centre of the country, Madhya Pradesh, this paradise is divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, spreading across 940 sq kms, while the buffer zone stretches up to a vast 1,067sq kms.

The Kanha Tiger Reserve is filled with electrifying energy in every part of it. The mud and its fragrance seems to preach its undying history. The Kanha, which was once a National Park in 1955 was transformed into the what it is today, a tiger reserve, in 1973 due to the depleting population of the tigers. As of now, Kanha is a home for diverse groups of wildlife including Royal Bengal tiger, Indian leopards, the sloth bear, barasingha, Indian wild dog and over 300 varieties of birds. The vegetation too leaves you fascinated as there are as much as a 1000 species of flowering plants which adds to thebeauty of this heaven.

The predominant attractions are the Royal Bengal Tigers and the barasingha. As a matter of fact, Kanha Tiger Reserve is also the first Tiger Reserve to officially introduce the mascot ‘Bhoorsingh’, the barasingha. Recently, mouse deers have also been discovered.Throughout the journey, the big cats and the barasinghas are frequent trespassers, boldly walking by, like it is their daily ritual. Apart from these never ending delights, the Kanha is also featured in the famous Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, a souvenir to our classic childhood memories. The Kanha Tiger Reserve was ranked among the ‘Top ten tourist places’, which adds another feather to the cap of the reserve and its vibrant wildlife.
